Dr. Clements was jolted by an awesome sense of inspiration and a new sense of direction. Visiting the M. Hanks Gallery in Santa Monica, California initiated this abrupt change. His wife Jean had managed to get him to attend an art presentation and discussion at the gallery. He became fascinated during the discussions. While exploring the gallery, a drawing by the famed black artist Charles H. Alston drew his attention. Mesmerized by the art, he began to reminisce on his passion and captivation with pencil art. He returned home and immediately tested his skills to determine if he could indeed produce a reasonable facsimile of the famed drawing. His initial creation is shown in frame #1. Several others then followed from scouring the country for candidate structures for his dilapidated houses series.
