This two story house situated in a suburban area on a small hill was originally built in the 1940?s and featured apparent additions. This view of the house captured the simple structural design, the three section house structure including the add-on front brick structure. There were three distinct sections to this structure: a front brick portion, a two level middle portion and a two level back portion. It had a minimal front doorstep area but ample double hung windows on all sides. One window shows the lower portion separated from the front sash. The side clapboard panels showed significant deterioration. The upper porch showed slight tilting which appeared to be a safety hazard. One adjacent house was not shown otherwise the landscape remained intact. The rear portion consisted of two stories. Next door on the right was a neighboring house though other nearby houses had already been demolished to make way for the downtown expansions.
This house was constructed near the region where the ?Walton County Massacre? occurred. In 1946--Four blacks, two of whom were female, are pulled from a car in Walton County by a gang of white men. One of the men had been accused of attacking his employer and had just been bailed out of jail. According to testimony, one of the females recognized the attackers. All four were murdered. This incident is commonly called the "Walton County Massacre?.
The deteriorating clapboards fade to the left vanishing point located off the drawing. The shading and shadows captured the angle of the sun emanating from the upper right. The drawing was initially done in pencil on 18 inch by 24 inch 90 pound acid free paper.
THE ARTIST?S IMPRESSION: I kept with the theme of families emerging from difficulty. The name is selected in concert with the theme of old abandoned dilapidated house. Because of the landscape, apparent add-ons and general mood of the house I suspect their may have been an original family with children who toiled and grew up to embark on separate journeys through life. I felt the house was eventually sold and the new family also struggled and also departed on their journey.
